As part of Art Hub Studios commitment to creating inclusive and affordable art opportunities, we offer a range of residencies that provide free access to the facilities for a 1 month period.

We are offering three candidates the opportunity to have 4 weeks free access to the Black and White Darkroom at Art Hub Studios in Woolwich between the months of June - August 2025.

This opportunity is aimed at someone who has an invested interest in black and white analogue photography and would like the opportunity to develop a current or new project in a community setting. We want someone who is going to use this opportunity to its full potential and actively engage with our community of creative practitioners.

You don’t need to have any formal art education to apply.

What’s Included.

  • 4 weeks free access to the black and white darkroom with 24/7 access

  • Free induction into the darkroom and studios

  • We provide Stop and Fixer (you will need to provide developer and all other materials)

  • Support from our darkroom technician

  • Group exhibition at Art Hub Studios gallery space, alongside the print and ceramics residents

 

Equipment.

  • DeVere 504 enlarger (50mm + 80mm lens)

  • 35mm and 6x6 negative masks

  • Film drying cabinet

  • Metal sink with running water

  • Chemical trays

  • Fridge

 

How To Apply.

  • Read the T&Cs below.

  • Select 2 preferred dates for the residency (refer to the key dates below)

  • Your application should include the following information: 
    - An artist statement telling us about yourself and your artistic practice (in 200 words or less)
    - Tell us about your experience in using a darkroom and a short proposal outlining what you will do during the residency (in 200 words or less)
    Example: It could be the continuation of a project or a whole new project.
    - Submit up to 5 images of work (any format is fine as long as we can open it)

  • Fill in our Diversity and Inclusion monitoring form using the link below. You must fill this in to be considered

  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend the studio on Monday 20 April where they will meet representatives from Art Hub Studios and the darkroom technician Sam Johnston.

  • Residency Dates:
    - 1 June - 28 June
    - 29 June - 26 July
    - 27 July - 23 August

  • In person meet ups with residents and Art Hub staff
    - Wed 27 May
    - Wed 24 June
    - Wed 22 July
    - Wed 19 August

  • Group exhibition - 20 - 26 October


Terms & Conditions.

  • Applicants must be 18 or over

  • Must be available to do the residency between the months of June - August

  • 3 days per week access to the darkroom with the possibility of more depending on availability as it is a shared facility.

  • Applicants must have experience working in a darkroom and feel confident working independently

  • Unfortunately we cannot accommodate a person who requires step free access
    - Please speak with us about any other access requirements you might need

  • The successful applicant will be required to sign the studio Licence Agreement and adhere to Art Hub Studios Policies and Procedures

  • The successful applicant will be required to pay a £25 key deposit

  • As a shared facility you will need to book a time slot to access the darkroom

  • Applicants must be available for the meet ups and the group exhibition

  • Applicants are responsible for curating and hanging the final group exhibition
